Penny Jeffries is a surface print designer specialising in screen print for interiors. Penny finds colour invaluable to her and her work; continuously experimenting with different tones and combinations. Drawing and painting are a big part of her design process and she translates her studies into large scale placement and repeat prints. Penny takes most of her inspiration from fluidity found in the natural world and from stitch. She enjoys working Kantha stitch into her prints; inspired by the added texture and depth the marks can make. She loves combinations of bold, dramatic shapes and little details.
Lotta Jansdotter Studio
2014 – 2014 • Brooklyn, NY
Working with Lotta Jansdotter allowed Penny to gain experience with an independent artist; discovering how important an online presence is. She learnt about the difficulties in running ones own business and shop and the process of designing and printing fabric; learning her daily routine and how she balances life and design.
Liza Prior Lucy
2014 – 2014 • Pennsylvania
Staying with Liza in her home in Pennsylvania and working alongside her in her studio Penny gained experience with the running of a business. She also learnt the importance of packaging and colour in fabric design. Penny learnt different patchwork techniques in both machine and by hand.
2013 – 2013 • London, UK
Working with Kaffe Fassett in his studio in London Penny witnessed his daily routine and life as an independent artist. Penny observed Kaffe Fassett’s colour workshop at the fashion museum and helped to pack away his exhibition. She also assisted him with his knitting and quilts. She cut fabric using the rotary cutter and placed them on the design wall. Once the design was in place she then used the sewing machine to stitch the fabric together. Penny also had the opportunity to hand piece part of a hexagon quilt and try needlepoint. She learnt about design development and has gained more confidence in her own ability.
